Texting and Driving Still a Prevalent Cause for Accidents

texting and drivingDistracted driving is dangerous, everyone knows this but so many still do it. Checking texts or emails or sending a reply to a message takes focus off of the road for a minimum of 5 seconds. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. That is about a quarter of all motor vehicle accidents. Texting while driving makes a crash 23 times more likely to happen. Nearly 330,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving.

Though many cities, including Denton and Arlington, have passed ordinances banning texting while driving, Texas is one of the few states that does not have a statewide ban on the use of electronics while behind the wheel. In March 2015, the Texas House of Representatives tentatively voted in favor of a statewide ban on the use of electronics while driving, but there are still many debates regarding the specifics of the laws to be enforced. This issue is expected to continue its growth under Governor Abbott, who has not directly addressed his stance on the matter. Former Governor Perry previously vetoed a bill that would have put a statewide ban on texting and driving. We expect that until there is statewide reform on distracted driving, accidents caused by cell phone use will continue to rise.
