Car Seat Safety

An auto accident can occur at any time. Luckily your baby or toddler is strapped in to that fancy car seat in the back. Unfortunately, many parents or caretakers do not properly secure the car seats that their little ones ride in. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, “correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.” The safety features of these items only work if they are installed properly. Here are a few tips for the proper way to purchase and use car seats and what to do if an accident occurs.

  • Do not buy a used car seat unless you are certain that you know the crash history of the seat. Car seats that have been involved in crashes may have had the safety system compromised may not function properly.
  • Consult with an expert to ensure that you are installing the seat correctly. In many states, first responders and hospital staff are trained in inspecting the installation of car seats and will perform this service for free.
  • Attach information about your child to their car seat. In the event that a crash leaves the drivers unconscious, first responders will use this information to identify the child’s name and age, the parents, the pediatrician and any medical conditions or allergies the child may have.

If you have been involved in an accident with your children in the car, it is usually advisable to have the children checked by a pediatrician, especially if they are not of speaking age.  Symptoms can sometimes take hours or days to appear, be sure to monitor the children closely so that any injuries can be checked out as soon as possible.
